✨The Imprint

What Happened While You Were Becoming?

A crystal is more than its recipe.

Its chemistry tells us what it is.

Its crystalline structure gives it form.

But neither tells the whole story.

Because every stone became itself somewhere.

An Earth-born crystal formed within the body of the Mother

held among other minerals,

water,

heat,

pressure,

darkness,

movement,

and time.

Sometimes for thousands of years.

Sometimes for millions.

It did not form alone.

Its surroundings participated in its becoming.

And perhaps that matters.

The Recipe and the Becoming

A laboratory can reproduce the conditions necessary for a crystal to grow.

The resulting crystal may have the same chemical composition

and crystalline structure as one formed within the Earth.

It is real crystal.

But it does not have the same story.

The recipe may tell us what something is,

while the environment in which it formed

helps determine what it became.

That difference is what I think of as the imprint.

Not better or worse.

Not real or fake.

Different.

Born of the Earth

I think of crystals much as I think of children growing within a womb.

Before a child ever sees the world,

there has already been relationship.

Heartbeat.

Movement.

Sound.

Rhythm.

Warmth.

The chemistry of the body surrounding them.

They arrive carrying their own nature,

but they have also been held within another living environment

while becoming themselves.

I wonder about stones in much the same way.

An Earth-born crystal has spent its formation within

an immense geological womb.

The Earth held it while it became itself.

When the Earth Gives Them Back

There are places where stones simply appear.

Weather releases them.

Water moves them.

Mountains crumble.

The ground opens.

And suddenly there they are

scattered across the surface as though the Earth

has decided she is finished holding them.

Those places have changed the way I think about collecting stones.

There is something very different about

encountering a stone the Earth has already released

and cutting deeply into her in order to take one.

I don’t pretend to know where that boundary lies.

I simply think it is worth noticing.

Perhaps part of working respectfully with stones is

remembering that they are not merely materials.

They came from somewhere.

They underwent something.

They have a history.

And What of Lab-Created Stones?

I don’t think a laboratory-grown crystal must therefore be empty.

It,

too,

has an origin.

It,

too,

grew within an environment.

But humans created that environment.

Its heat,

pressure,

chemistry,

timing,

and containment were chosen

and controlled for its formation.

If there is such a thing as energetic imprint

and I experience the world as though there is

then I would expect that history to matter.

Not because one crystal is worthy

and another is not.

Simply because:

They were held by different wombs.

What Happened While You Were Becoming?

Perhaps that is one of the questions we can bring to a stone.

Not only:

What are you?

But:

Where did you come from?

What surrounded you?

How long were you there?

How did you come into the light?

And finally—

What happened while you were becoming?

Because sometimes the story of a thing begins

long before it reaches our hands.
