💧 Elixirs
Where several parts of the garden meet.
An elixir begins when individual botanical preparations are brought together
with intention to create something new.
Where an extract often allows us to spend time with a particular plant,
an elixir gives several ingredients an opportunity to work together.
Roots may meet flowers.
Leaves may meet berries.
One botanical may provide the foundation
while another changes the direction of the whole preparation.
The result is not simply a collection of ingredients.
It is a composition.
🌿 Building an Elixir
I think about an elixir much the way I think about creating anything else at 5K.
Every ingredient needs a reason for being there.
Some plants build.
Some soften.
Some move.
Some steady.
And sometimes the smallest ingredient changes the character of everything around it.
More is not necessarily better.
The goal is relationship.
🫙 From Individual Plants to a Whole
An elixir may incorporate botanical extracts or other preparations,
depending upon the formula.
That means much of the work happens before the final ingredients ever meet.
Each plant has already been considered individually:
What part of the plant am I using?
What does the preparation draw from it?
What does it contribute?
And what happens when it meets the others?
Only then does the elixir begin to take form.
✨ The Art of Formulation
This is the part I particularly love.
An herbal formula can have structure much like a piece of jewelry,
a painting,
or a garden.
There can be a foundation.
A center.
Something that creates movement.
Something that holds everything together.
And eventually there is that wonderful moment
when the individual pieces stop feeling separate.
They have become the formula.

5K elixirs are created as intentional botanical formulas
rather than collections of every herb that might possibly fit into a bottle.
The plants are chosen because of the relationships between them
and the purpose of the preparation.
It is another way the garden teaches me something I seem to encounter everywhere:
What something becomes depends partly upon what it is allowed to meet.
