Shell carries the visible record of growth.
Its curves, ridges, chambers, spirals and layers are created as the animal grows, expanding its shelter rather than abandoning it.

Shell holds an unusual place within the collection because it stands at the meeting point of animal, mineral and water.
The animal creates it.
Mineral gives it structure.
Water is the world in which it is formed.
Even after the animal is gone, the architecture remains.
