🖤 Obsidian

The Revealing Mirror

Obsidian does not begin slowly.

There is no long crystallization deep within the Earth.

It begins with molten rock

heated,

moving,

transformed

and then cooled so quickly that crystals do not have time to form.

What remains is volcanic glass.

Dark.

Smooth.

Reflective.

And perhaps it is fitting that a material born through such rapid transformation

has become associated with seeing clearly what is already there.

Obsidian carries the character of The Revealing Mirror.

It does not decide what we should see.

It simply asks whether we are willing to look.

🌋 Born of Fire

Obsidian forms when silica-rich lava cools rapidly,

creating natural volcanic glass rather than an ordinary crystalline rock.

Its surfaces can become extraordinarily smooth

and its fractured edges remarkably sharp.

Human beings recognized those qualities thousands of years ago.

Obsidian became tools.

Blades.

Arrowheads.

Objects of ceremony and adornment.

And,

when polished

mirrors.

Long before we gave Obsidian metaphysical meanings,

people were quite literally looking into it.

🖤 How Obsidian Works With Us

In stone traditions,

Obsidian is commonly associated with

grounding,

protection,

clearing,

and revealing what has been hidden.

Within the Litharium,

I think the last of those is particularly important.

A mirror does not create what appears within it.

It reveals.

That can sometimes be uncomfortable.

There are things we would rather walk around than look directly at.

Old patterns.

Assumptions.

Fears.

Stories we have carried for so long

that we have forgotten they are stories.

Obsidian does not need to fight any of them.

Its character simply asks:

Is this still true?

🖤 Black Obsidian

The Clear Mirror

Black Obsidian is perhaps the most direct expression of the family.

There is little distraction in its darkness.

Polished, it becomes reflective.

Raw,

its broken surfaces catch the light in sharp planes.

Its character feels straightforward:

Look again.

Not because something must be wrong.

Not because something must be fixed.

Simply because seeing clearly gives us the opportunity

to choose consciously what we carry forward.

Black Obsidian reminds us that there is a difference between

something being hidden

and something simply not yet having been looked at.

🌈 Rainbow Obsidian

The Light Within the Dark

At first glance,

Rainbow Obsidian may appear almost entirely black.

Then the angle changes.

Light reaches it differently.

And suddenly

color.

Bands and flashes of green,

violet,

gold,

blue,

or rose

can emerge from what moments earlier

appeared to contain nothing but darkness.

The colors are created by microscopic structures within the volcanic glass

that interact with light.

Nothing was added when the rainbow appeared.

It was already there.

That gives Rainbow Obsidian

a beautiful variation on the Obsidian character.

Where Black Obsidian asks us to look,

Rainbow Obsidian reminds us to change the angle.

Sometimes what appears empty is not empty.

Sometimes what appears dark contains something

we simply cannot see from where we are standing.

The darkness was never empty.

We simply had to turn it toward the light to see what it held.

💚 Green Obsidian

The Gentle Mirror

Natural Obsidian can occasionally appear greenish because of its chemistry,

inclusions,

and the way light travels through the glass.

Its character still belongs to Obsidian.

It still reveals.

It still clears.

It still asks for truth.

But Green Obsidian feels like the softer voice in the family.

There is a difference between truth used as a weapon

and truth offered as an invitation.

Green Obsidian reminds us that seeing ourselves clearly

does not require becoming cruel toward what we find.

We can recognize an old pattern

without condemning the one who learned it.

We can change our minds

without being ashamed of what we once believed.

We can see where we have been

and still tend ourselves kindly while choosing where we go next.

Truth does not have to wound

in order to change us.

❄️ Snowflake Obsidian

The Changing Mirror

Snowflake Obsidian begins as volcanic glass,

but the pale “snowflakes” within it are crystals of cristobalite

that have begun to form inside the dark glass.

There is something beautiful in that.

What appeared finished was still becoming.

Within the Obsidian family,

Snowflake carries the same invitation to look clearly,

but with an added reminder that what we see today

is not necessarily what we will always be.

Patterns emerge.

Old ones change.

Something new can take shape within what is already there.

We are not finished simply because we have taken form. ❄️🖤

📝 A Note from the Keeper

I think there is a reason I like the idea of Obsidian as a mirror

rather than a shield.

Protection can sometimes become another way of hiding.

But seeing clearly gives us choices.

We can discover that something we feared isn’t actually ours.

We can recognize something we’ve outgrown.

We can notice beauty where we expected only darkness.

And sometimes we can look at something we’ve judged harshly

and understand it differently.

Perhaps that is another kind of guardianship.

Not guarding us from everything uncomfortable

but guarding our ability to see for ourselves.

The mirror does not tell us who to become.

It simply lets us see who is here now.
