🐾 The Mountain Companions

Animals have always been part of the way I experience the world.

They have been teachers, comedians, guardians, traveling companions, comforters and, occasionally, very determined troublemakers.

Addie walked the mountain trails with me, plunged herself into freezing creeks, watched deer with fascination, and somehow knew when a person needed one of her famous leg-hugs.

You can learn about Addie in 🦊Fellow Travelers

Others who shared my life still appear throughout these pagesβ€”in photographs, memories and stories.

And then there are the companions I can already imagine.

Bierna and Fiona, the sheep.

Haldor, the llama.

Lugin and Lumi, the Fjords.

Some belong to a dream of the mountain that is still becoming.

Perhaps one day there will be hoofprints outside the gate and woolly faces waiting for breakfast.

For now, they remind me that a dream doesn’t have to exist yet to begin shaping the life we are building toward.

🀎 From the Keeper

I don’t think home is simply the place where we keep our belongings.

I think home is where we recognize ourselves.

Where our hands remember what they like to make.

Where our bodies remember the rhythm of the seasons.

Where animals are family.

Where food is shared.

Where the garden is allowed to be imperfect.

Where beauty doesn’t need to justify its existence.

And where there is always room for one more story.

So wander.

Open doors.

Follow whatever catches your attention.

There is no correct path through this place.

Welcome home.

May something here deepen your relationship with the living world.
