South Crestone Creek

Before I ever dreamed of having an apothecary, I had this creek.

It taught me where to find yarrow.

It offered rose hips in autumn.

Red willow bark.

Juniper berries.

Mushrooms after summer rain.

Pinyon sap and nuts.

I came here to gather herbs.

I left carrying something much harder to name.

The Gathering Place

South Crestone Creek became one of my classrooms.

There were no shelves.

No labels.

No neat little jars identifying what everything was for.

There was simply the creek…

and the plants growing where they had chosen to grow.

I learned to notice them.

What grew near water.

What preferred the drier slopes.

What appeared after rain.

What ripened when the days became shorter.

And what returned year after year whether I was there to witness it or not.

At first, I thought I was learning about plants.

Eventually, I realized I was learning about relationship.

Take Less. Notice More.

When you gather from a place you love, harvesting begins to feel different.

You stop seeing abundance as an invitation to take everything.

You begin noticing what should remain.

A few rose hips left for wildlife.

A stand of yarrow allowed to keep flowering.

A mushroom admired instead of picked.

A tree thanked for what it offers.

The basket doesn’t have to be full for the walk to have been worthwhile.

Sometimes the greatest harvest is simply knowing that you can return next season…

and find the place thriving.

The Creek

And always…

there was the water.

Moving around stones.

Falling over roots.

Finding another way whenever something stood in its path.

I could arrive carrying a head full of noise and sit beside that creek long enough for something inside me to change.

The creek never asked me to solve anything.

It simply kept moving.

Perhaps that was the lesson.

Not everything needs to be figured out before we can continue.

Sometimes we simply find the next opening…

and flow through.

From the Keeper

Years later, when 5K High Altitude Apothecary began taking shape, I realized that much of what I wanted to create had already been taught to me here.

Pay attention.

Know what you’re gathering.

Take only what you need.

Respect what remains.

Return something whenever you can.

And never mistake possession for relationship.

Long before there was an Herbarium…

there was South Crestone Creek.

A Quiet Reflection

Before you leave…

If you were to sit beside this stream for an hour with no phone, no agenda, and nowhere else to be…

What do you think would finally become quiet inside you?
