πŸ‘€ Look Again

The world rarely changes.

Our way of seeing often does.

We move through the world naming things quickly.

Tree.

Stone.

Dragonfly.

Cloud.

Person.

Once we have named something, it is very easy to believe we have seen it.

But naming and seeing are not necessarily the same thing.

Sometimes all that is required is a change in distance.

A different angle.

A moment of stillness.

Or the willingness to look one more time.

And suddenly…

something familiar becomes extraordinary.

Re-Spect

I love playing with words.

spect = to look, to see.

re- = again, back, anew.

So:

re-spect β†’ look again.

in-spect β†’ look into.

pro-spect β†’ look forward.

retro-spect β†’ look back.

circum-spect β†’ look around.

Even spectacles help us see.

There is something beautiful hidden inside that family of words.

Perhaps respect begins with being willing to look again.

At another person.

At an animal.

At a plant.

At an idea.

At ourselves.

What We Almost Miss

The world is full of things we think we already know.

But move closer to a dragonfly…

and there is an entire universe in its eyes.

Stand in front of an old tree long enough…

and perhaps somebody starts looking back.

Look at something you’ve passed a hundred times…

and on the hundred-and-first, you may finally see it.

Not because the thing changed.

Because you did.

A Quiet Reflection

Before you continue…

Choose something near you that you think you already know.

Don’t name it.

Don’t explain it.

Just look.

Then…

look again.

What did you miss the first time?

Some Experiences that had me look again…
